General Information
2020-2021 School Year:
For the 2020-2021 school year, check CTLS and Google Classroom for the most up-to-date materials for Mrs. Phillips' classes. I am leaving the materials on this publicly accessible website up so the resources are easily accessible for other teachers. However, if you are one of my students this year, only use this site for reference (ex: there are some excellent websites and videos hyperlinked on this site). I won't be updating this website for the 2020-2021 school year unless we return to the classroom face-to-face, full time.

Class Procedures from 3/16/20 through May 2020:
(*check back and/or refresh this page often- there will be updates/additions after #4, below):
1- Document I gave to students on Friday, 3/13. Please read over this carefully!
2- These were the original due dates for Unit 5, if we had been in school (Pic #1 and Pic #2).
4- Student Year-Long Projects: See both #1 (above) and also go to the "Projects" page & review requirements given on Checkpoint #1 and Checkpoint #2. There will be a Checkpoint #3 uploaded within the next week or so regarding your progress on the project. It will be the last Checkpoint before the Project Presentations after the EOC in May.
5- More info later...I need to go do this for both Mag Biochem and AP Bio before my phone "blows up" (haha). Hope everyone is healthy and well...that's THE most important thing!
Everything you see below was posted the first day of class in January 2020. Everything above this point is information of new virtual class procedures due to the coronavirus pandemic and Cobb schools closing beginning the week of 3/16/20.
First of all, welcome to all of my new students for the 2019- 2020 school year! Please use the sub-pages for current information regarding the upcoming 2020 (spring) semester.
I am really looking forward to meeting all of you. It's going to be an amazing semester!

Please join your class Remind account for Spring 2020. This is a great way to get class information! Here is the link to join.
*Daily Agendas will NOT be posted on this site. They will be posted on the Smart Board for the first 5 minutes of class each day, so be sure and write due dates down! Too often, there are last minute changes and it would take too long to post, re-post, re-repost (I'm hoping you get the picture) for me to do that. You can even use your phone and take a picture of the Daily Agendas, if you prefer, but you must do it first thing when getting to class and then you must put your phone away for the remainder of the block.
Assignments for Spring 2019 are still posted on each unit's sub-page. I will modify them as we proceed through each unit.
Information regarding the textbook(s) we will be using this semester is on both the "Resources" sub-page and the "Announcements" sub-page.
*Not every classwork or homework assignment will be graded. I will select 2-3 assignments per unit to grade, so BE SURE YOU HAVE EVERY ASSIGNMENT FOR THE CURRENT UNIT WE ARE STUDYING WITH YOU EVERY DAY. LATE DAILY WORK (CW OR HW) WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED UNLESS YOU HAVE AN EXCUSED ABSENCE!
I have been teaching for a looong time and I've been teaching Magnet science classes since the program began, almost 20 years ago (yikes!). I love what I do. There's nothing better than observing that 'ah ha!' moment when I know a light bulb just 'turned on' in one of my kid's heads. I'm looking forward to those moments and getting to know each & every one of you! 😊

**Please note for those taking this course: Magnet Biology is NOT the same course as AP Biology. There is NO summer assignment for Magnet Biology and no access code is needed.

- Obviously, we'll "lag" behind this timeline somewhat (kind of like an Okazaki fragment...haha).
- Students will likely have more trouble understanding the material without being in the classroom and going through our "typical procedures" on unit concepts, such as:
- Warm-Ups;
- Going through unit PPts together and receiving more explanation, analogies, drawing processes on whiteboard, demos & "role playing", asking me questions & receiving immediate feedback, labs, etc. Therefore, there will be no penalty if students submit work late. Work must be submitted to their Unit 5 Google subfolders- NOT by email or Remind (see #1, above).
- Students are not expected to spend an unreasonable amount of time on required Bio homework (around 30 minutes or so).
- Some assignments (including watching videos and good teacher 'lectures') are highly recommended, but not required (go to Unit 5 for this info, which will be updated every day or two). However, if you're not clearly understanding concepts after reading/studying both my PPt and the OpenStax text, you should carefully consider doing these "optional" assignments. Also, your Wheeler Magnet gmail accounts come with the bonus of having some good apps, such as Google Hangout. Students are encouraged to make student peer study groups, as that would likely facilitate learning.
- The Unit 5 Test will be 1-2 days after we return to school. Students should make every effort to not get too far behind. *FYI: the test will NOT be the first day we return!
