Announcements2017-2018 School Year
11/27/17: I gave you this handout of 'Common Mistakes' when I returned your research papers. MAKE THE CORRECTIONS! Point deductions will be significant for your final project if you don't! 11/17/17- The data for your research project is due Tuesday, 11/28 (not Monday, 11/27). Charts and graphs must be computer generated. 10/23/17- Research Project date changes: The first logbook check has been changed to Friday, 10/27 and the Materials and Methods paper postponed until 11/8. Information regarding the Art Data component has now been posted under "Research Project", below (scroll down) 10/11/17- Assignments: 1-Pick up DNA Webquest WS from front table. The WS (with hyperlinks) is also posted under Unit 6 (assignment #1). Pair up on computers and start in class & finish for HW. Stop when you get to Part 2 (it will be done with Chap 14). 2- Also, there is another sheet (Ch 13-DNA WS) on the front table that I encourage you to do (you MUST know the information for the test), but I will not require that you do it if you complete the Ch 13 RG (due MONDAY). 3- Work on your Project. Research Paper is due next week (10/18). I am considering changing the date the logbook is due from 10/20 until 10/23 or 10/24, since a few people have had to reformulate procedures and start over. That's part of learning to be a good scientist, so I do not want to penalize anyone for that! 9/24/17- Fall Break Assignments: 1- Do Ch 11 RG through monohybrid crosses 2- Do front and back of 1st page of Monohybrid Crosses packet 3- Do www.usatestprep.com assignment (posted Sunday evening 9/24 and due Sunday 10/1). *IMPORTANT- If you have not enrolled in the class before I post the assignment, you will NOT have access to it and will receive a 0. I allowed TWO days in class to do this, so unless you were absent BOTH Thursday and Friday, no make-ups will be allowed. You will NOT be penalized for missing some questions, as this is an EOC Practice Test and will have some questions over material not yet covered. You will get full credit if you: A- Submit by deadline B- Spend an 'appropriate' amount of time doing the 'test' (the site gives me that info) C- Retest ALL missed questions D- I will also grade you on improvement on 'tests' as the semester progresses *Click here for usatestprep.com instructions 4- Begin working on your Semester Research Project. If you have to make some slight changes to your procedures (ex- pot size, volumes of H2O given to organism, etc), that's okay. JUST MAKE NOTES IN YOUR LAB COMPOSITION NOTEBOOK (required and will be checked) 5- Mitosis Lab- Due MONDAY, 10/1. I will collect it AFTER we are done in the Media Center and as soon as we return to my room around 3:15. Btw...we will meet in my room briefly at the beginning of 4th block (to take the roll) and then go directly to the Media Center for instruction regarding research and APA format for your Research Project. 9/10/17- Please actively check your Remind app. NO SCHOOL MON. OR TUES. DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER. Due Wednesday: 1) Photosynthesis WQ (hyperlinks for sites is under Unit 4 Assignments in left column). Remember, I gave you a hard copy on Friday to write your answers on; 2) Both labs. Membrane Permeability Lab stapled on top of Osmosis/Plasmolysis Lab; 3) Ch 7 RG; 4) Worksheet with Chloroplast pic on it; 5) Research Plan (link for sheet is below, scroll down) 6) THIS IS NEW! Go to this site and watch this video: Photosynthesis and Respiration. The sheet that goes with the video is in left column under Unit 4. If you don't have a printer, write the ques and answers on another sheet of paper. 7) Recommended: P'Syn PPt Questions. Resp PPt Questions. Links are under Unit 4, as well as other 'Reviews' for this unit. Start studying! Ch 7 & 8 Test is THURSDAY. Stay safe kiddos. See you soon! :) 8/27/17- update to my last announcement: I was told it will only work in Explorer. Hopefully, that solves any technical issues you might be having! 8/27/17- If anyone is having problems with opening some of the animations for the 'In and Out' Cells Webquest, try this (I copied and pasted the following from their site):
8/24/17- Your 'First Objective' topic for the Research Project is now due Tuesday, 8/29 instead of Monday, 8/28. Your class has to meet with Ms. Moudgal during 4th block on Monday. Be sure to use the 'First Objective' form that I will give you in class tomorrow. It's also linked, below (scroll down). 8/21/17: Happy Eclipse Day! I only have one student here today, so I wanted to remind you about 2 things: 1) Ch 2 & 3 Test is tomorrow; 2) Your research topic is due NEXT MONDAY, 8/28. Scroll down to the 'Research Project' information in this column. Click on 'First Objective'. You will find several hyperlinks to sites that may help you find ideas. 7/30/17: Please sign up for a Remind account. Hyperlinks are above, under 'General Information' ResourcesRESEARCH PROJECT
2018/19: This was on the 2019 blog. I removed it because some thought this was the current rubric: 2/11/2019: Here's More Info about the STEM Project PLEASE READ: The below info (with bullets) is from 2017-2018. There will be changes and modifications made to the rubric this year. ---Example: If you do a STEM Project, I will not require Art Data, since we have STEAM Project options this year. ---Also, you will be required to write up a formal lab report, but I will give you instructions for what I will require this year after we return from break (so the rubric will be modified). ---The 3rd checkpoint will be due at the end of March for those trying out for Symposium. For all others, it will be due the week after Spring Break (I'll give you the specific date in class soon) --- Again, any dates you see below are from last year. I will update info as soon as I can (likely, over the break)
2017-18 12/5/17- MODIFIED RUBRIC- SEE THE LAST 2 PAGES for changes. Go over this ASAP!! *READ THIS - 11/27/17*: I gave you this handout of 'Common Mistakes' when I returned your research papers. Irma) 6- links_for_ideas.docx Project Ideas- Here are some links to other sites that may give you some ideas. Remember: Your project must be on a living organism, but NO VERTEBRATES 7- APA format - Purdue OWL is your best source, but apastyle.org has info regarding citing sources with missing information (ex- author, date, etc.) and answers to other questions 8- Materials and Methods section- look over this for help (and go over the 'check list' at the end of the document) 9. Here's a 'standard' rubric many use for grading research papers. Please know that I understand this is your first attempt at it, so I will adjust some of the categories and points. As you all progress through Magnet, AP and post-AP classes, there will be less flexibility and you'll have to meet each standard, though. Just do your best! 10- Art Data PPt- There is a link on a slide in this PPt for 'Ted Talks' which will provide more insight, information and ideas for this component of your project.
